Generac is garbage, but I'm sure you know that by now. Plus, we are in our forever home, which is why I need a long term fix to Oncor’s nonsense and why I’m OK financing this over 20 years. I may be oversimplifying things, but my thought process is: the sun isn’t going anywhere. We also realized that Atmos doesn’t exactly do a great job of winterizing their infrastructure either, so going to a gas generator is still a single point of failure. Even going to Generac corporate didn’t generate a response. I was told in no uncertain terms that they had enough work and didn’t need to earn our business - I could either accept the quote with the variables built in, or I could bring a copy of our survey (which doesn’t even show where the panel is) to Rowlett. One, the Generator SuperCenter in Rowlett, quoted a system over the phone and said there’d be extra charges if they needed more wire/pipe to connect everything, but then they refused to do a site visit to firm up the estimate. The main reason we went down this path was 2 Generac dealers didn’t even return our calls. I want to harness the power of the sun all for my own. Just to give a fun example, during the winter storm, we had a transformer being replaced near Mansfield and an out of state emergency crew from Pike was complaining about how the transformer was COMPLETELY mislabeled and pointing in the wrong direction, forcing a bunch of extra stress on the system as well as extra work to replace it and the underground lines. This will be commonplace until the government gets their shit together and forces a change (don't hold your breath). You all saw what happened during the winter storm. Texas infrastructure is one of the worst since it's based on businesses trying to shortcut and make things as cheaply as they legally (or illegally if they can sneak it) can. THAT BEING SAID: they are absolutely a dumpster fire. Typically the older the neighborhood, the more issues you will have naturally. Also keep in mind the storms/weather have been putting extra stress on everything from transformers to lines, to underground as well. With so many neighborhoods being put in at the same time over the last few decades, a lot of the equipment is failing at once.
